Hennessey McLaren 600LT Challenges Stock 720S

The McLaren 720S is a special vehicle in the realm of drag race. It’s among the world’s most potent cars in standard shape. It has experience defeating SUVs, sports cars, and supercars. In factory configuration, it’s close enough to being unbeatable. The most effective way to threaten it is probably by taking another McLaren and boosting its power with Hennessey’s tuning kit before putting both together in a drag strip, like done in this video.

A McLaren 600LT is good enough for this job. After being modified, the car was taken by Hennessey to the Pennzoil Proving Ground where it would be pitted up against a 720S in stock form. A series of drag races was then held to find out if the tuned 600LT really has the capability to take on a 720S.

Normally, the 600LT can crank out as much as 592 horsepower, which is more than enough to push it from zero to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. But as we said before, the car in the clip isn’t a normal example of the 600LT – it belongs to John Hennessey. So you can guess what he has done to the beast to make it ready to fight the 720S. The machine has been treated with an upgraded exhaust system and ECU software, lifting its grunt to 658 horsepower at wheels.

On the other hand, the 720S packs a V8 mill and has 710 crank horsepower on tap. Earlier this year, Hennessey put the car on the dyno and found out that its wheel output is 675.8 hp, meaning that the drivetrain loss is 4.82% between the engine and the wheels, which is pretty big. Now after knowing the gap between the two, there’s only one question left, can this slight power advantage be a winning factor for the 720S in its race against the Hennessey 600 LT? Find the answer in the video below.
